Hidden paths

The Wax Palm Forest of Pijao

At the end of our mountain track begins another world.

High above, hidden in the misty mountains of Pijao, lies one of the region’s few remaining protected wax palm forests, often referred to as the “secret forest” of wax palms.

The wax palm—the national tree of Colombia—can reach more than 60 metres in height. Majestic, slender, and almost unreal when emerging from the clouds, it grows in high-altitude Andean forests and shelters an extraordinary biodiversity.

Once threatened by deforestation, this iconic tree is now protected and remains one of the most emblematic symbols of the Coffee Triangle.

The Pijao cloud forest (bosque de niebla) is a magical place for hiking. Among misty forests, giant ferns, yarumos, cedars, and the silence of the mountains, every ascent reveals new perspectives over the Andean landscapes.

It is also a true paradise for birdwatching: toucans, hummingbirds, tanagers, and many other Andean species find refuge in this preserved ecosystem.

At the very end of the trail, you will also discover a small rural school welcoming children from the surrounding countryside, as well as a local producer making delicious artisanal cheeses.

In short, there is no need to travel all the way to the Cocora Valley or La Carbonera to admire these majestic trees. Just a few kilometres from the finca, the mountains of Pijao are home to their own ancient giants.

Casa Coyaima offers a guided visit to this unique place.
